Shipping industry declares war on invasive species
This morning, Teresa Lloyd – CEO of MIAL introduced the Hon Barnaby Joyce MP Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, who announced Australia’s ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC). In a sign of global unity, the Australian shipping industry has applauded Australia’s ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) and the additional marine environmental protection it provides. The Convention will enter into force on 8 September 2017.
Australia’s High Commisioner to Britain, Alexander Downer is signing the protocol today in London. Teresa Lloyd says “the convention requires ships to have equipment to ‘treat’ ballast water so as to render it harmless. This technological progress has been a long time coming and Australia’s ratification of the Convention, as announced today by the Hon Barnaby Joyce MP, is commended by the industry - even though it comes at a hefty cost to install and operate.
