Maritime industry welcomes new Turnbull Ministry
MIAL welcomes the announcement that The Hon Darren Chester MP retains the Infrastructure and Transport portfolio in the new Turnbull Ministry.
“Our dealings with Minister Chester since he took over the transport portfolio responsibility earlier this year have been very positive, open and inclusive,” said Teresa Lloyd, CEO of MIAL.
“We believe the Minister is genuine in his desire to make positive changes to policy settings that affect the Australian maritime industry and coastal trading in particular and we look forward to sharing the outcome of our work in this space with him in the very near future” Ms Lloyd said.
Since earlier this year MIAL has been working with anyone and everyone who has been interested in formulating a policy that will provide certainty and stability of coastal trading policy settings. A green paper resulting from those discussion will be distributed for further discussion in coming days.
Minister Chester has also expressed an appreciation of the breadth of the maritime sector – from trading ships to offshore oil and gas activities, cruise and work boats and utility vessels.
MIAL also welcomes the appointment of Senator the Hon Matt Canavan as Minister for Resources and Northern Australia and his elevation to Cabinet.
“Maritime activity is critical to the ongoing prosperity and growth in Northern Australia” Ms Lloyd said.
MIAL look forward to working with both Minister Chester and Minister Canavan on delivering the Northern Australia White Paper priorities by highlighting where maritime activities can contribute to the Northern Australia Transport Plan and the White Paper objectives more generally.
