VICTORIA DOMINATES & RETAINS
CHAIRMAN’S SHIELD

As the temperature soared into the mid 30’s, the Australian Shipowners Association held their Annual Cricket Match on Tuesday 10 November to play for the coveted Australasian Steamship Owners Chairman’s Shield.

The two traditional foes of the Shield, Victoria and NSW, took the oval just after midday amid a vocal contingent of supporters and players.  Fittingly, Wayne Cooper (AMSA) umpired from the City End with Warrick Norman (Rightship) officiating at the Pavilion End.

VIC won the toss and sent NSW into bat scoring.  The NSW leadership made the most of their time at the crease with team Captain Evan Westgarth (ASP SM) contributing 30, and with vice captain Jack Manning (Teekay) the partnership amassed a total of 47.

The best of the Victorian bowlers hailed from Geelong with Victorian Captain Lena Smith and Brad Hili (both from Trident).  Victorian vice captain Hayden Latchford (BP) was impressive behind the stumps, taking two caught behinds.

Noel Hart (ASA Chairman) and Robyn Farrar (ASA) saw out the first session and after drinks and with a gentle southerly breeze, NSW took the field along with a change of umpires to Mick Kinley (AMSA) and Sean O’Neil (AMSA).

Josh Day (Teekay) took the prized scalp of Brett Whiteoak (BP) early, although that didn’t stop Brett from going on to make 22.

Top scorer for Victoria was Dale Emmerton (SeaRoad) with 39, well supported at the other end by Pete Mannion (Rio Tinto).  Rob Currie (ASA) made an impressive 21 on debut.

An element of controversy arose midway through the second session when observes began to question how much money changed hands for Teresa Hatch (ASA) to be caught off the bowling of David Parmeter (Teekay) no fewer than four times.  Fortunately the form displayed by each player in previous years supported the theory that nothing underhand had taken place.

Kim Pearce (ASP SM) steadied the mid order collapse with a solid 10 runs.  Some very tidy bowling figures from Erin Yates (Trident) and young gun Patrick Russell (Rio Tinto) bought NSW back into the game.

As the heat of the day slowly abated to a warm spring evening Victoria won the game by five runs, with a total score of 105.  Angela Gillham (ASA) was awarded most improved player and Dale Emmerton Man of the Match.

The Shield has a long and proud history having been first presented by W. T. Appleton in 1903, and has been played for by ASA members every year since 2003.
